Feet To the Fire- November

With November behind us we’ve just wrapped up our 3rd month with ‘Mike and Molly’s House’.  That leaves us 3 more months to build the blog full time.  We do want to make some income from the blog so we are using this time to focus on building it up as fast as possible.  Come March we will need to bring in other income to cover our expenses so we don’t need to dip into our savings.  One thing that keeps us focused on our goal of creating income from our blog is to report on our goals.

Molly:  I’m well aware making a living as a blogger is a bit of a pipe dream.  It’s tough and only the very few make it.  But…I want to be one of them!!!!  I love writing, researching and coming up with projects for this blog.  I don’t want to have it as a side job I want it as the job!  I also can’t help feeling like I’ve been here before.  Trying to make it big as a dance choreographer and than later trying our hand in building spec houses.  Why can’t we pick something where we actually have a chance at making a living? (whine…)

Mike:  Hon, I think you’re feeling the stress because we’re at the half way point and we really feel the clock ticking.  On the other hand it does feel like we’ve been here before.

Molly: Last month I was full of optimism but now the wind has been let out of my sails.

Mike:  Well, the big blow was when google kicked us out of Ad Sense.

Molly:  Yep, ‘invalid’ clicks on the ads is what they said.  I guess we had too many people clicking the ads for how many people come to the blog.

Mike:  Can we help it that our peeps love to look at ads?!  And come on 3-12 clicks a day is excessive???

Molly:  No Honey, we can’t, but Ad Sense doesn’t care.  We appealed their decision and they refused to put the ads back up or give us our money (over $100 this month).  This means that in November we made no money blogging.  It’s deflating to go backwards.

Mike:  I’m thinking ebooks… Any readers have experience with ebooks.  Producing them?  Buying them?  We’d love to hear from you!

We know December will fly by so we need to set realistic goals.

Guest Posting:

In November we did 1 guest post and 7 Instructables.  We need to stretch here and do more guest posting.

Posts:  20!  Our goal is to write at least 20 each month.

Visitors: 2,798-out of those 1,833 were ‘unique’ visitors (AKA- new readers)

October we had 2,144 visitors and 1,407 were unique

AdSense:  $0 (ARGGG!)

In October we made $11.85 for the month from people viewing our videos on You Tube.  By mid November we had made $113 dollars, that is until they ripped it all away!

Since November 1st all of you helped us to go from:

54  Facebook fans to 88!

115  Twitter followers to 154!

100 subscribers to 131! (email and RSS)

Our Alexa ranking* went from  313,805 (and 29,855 in the US) to 188,454 (and 29,961 in the US)

This was so awesome!  Our goal was to pass 200,000 by December 31st and we got it early!  The not so good was our US rating got worse ? 🙁  It’s weird because it was tracking with the overall rating.  It got to 26,300 and then two weeks ago it started creeping in the wrong direction.  What’s up with that?

Linking to other sites makes the algorithm at Google feel warm and fuzzy about us.  Thanks to all of you who are mentioning us out in the blog-o-sphere!  Here’s the top 5 referrers from this past month:

1.   Nicole and Maggie

2. Penniless Parenting

3.  Minting Nickles

4.  Frugally Sustainable

5. Yakezie

We’ve gone from 27 incoming linking sites to 61   (nice job Molly- she’s our main commenter)

Goals for December:

3500 visits

20 posts

2 guest posts

4 Instructable posts

140 Facebook Fans

200 Twitters Fans

175 Subscribers

Thanks for coming and reading what we have to say.  To everyone that has mentioned us to a friend or shared us on a social network site here’s a big hug out to you!  All those little things add up to our audience growing.

*Alexa rating:  It’s a ranking system of over 4 million websites.  If your rank is ’1? it means you are the most popular website on their list and you’re called gmail.  They rank you internationally and within the US.

Guess what? You can subscribe to Mike and Molly’s House through our RSS feed or email. You can also follow our Facebook Fanpage  or join us on Twitter.  You’ll never miss a thing and it lets us know that we’re giving you posts that you value.

You guys are really talented and while some make money off of advertising it may not be in your best interest. Why? It could be the evil corporate structure doesn’t fit with your sensibility.  Your esthetic reminds me of rootsimple.com and they promote their own books. Not sure if it supports them though!

Have you looked into public domain info? This is where you buy old books (especially how-to varieties) prior to 1923 and repackage them in a modern format and sell them as an ebook. Some later stuff published in the 60s is also copyright free…just gotta do the homework. Good luck!

Diane, you’re very sweet.  The ads are something we go back and forth on.  What they are selling and what they look like are important to us although we have yet to define how important they are.
Root Simple would be a great site to approach about guest posting. I like your book idea (and so does Mike- it’s really up his alley).

From what I understand, individual advertising is where to make the real money.  Although she hates us, I understand Budgeting in the Fun Stuff is a great person to hire to manage and negotiate for you.

What did you do to piss her off?! Come on, do tell!
Ok, all kidding aside…What did you do? (you can email all the nasty details).
Mike’s attempting to cut me off right now from finishing my comment and yelling something like,’Drama Molly, come down off the ledge!’

Let’s just say we were removed from at least two blogrolls on July 25th.

Oh Boy!  It’s like the day we lost 4 Facebook fans…
We get so many people coming over from your blogroll on a daily basis AND they actually stay and look around. Mike and I can’t thank you enough for having us on your roll!

Generally we only take folks off once they stop posting regularly… or if they get really mad at us and we figure we’re no longer welcome.  So no worries!

Well, I’ve been blogging for a year and a half and my adsense balance is $75, so I think in comparison you’re doing just fine and I think my readers is 161 last I checked but I haven’t really been focused on revenue or building readership given my time constraints.

You are making amazing progress. It takes time. I think it was a year before I got a page rank worthy of advertising and even then I say no to a lot of stuff because I’m pretty picky about what I’ll put on my site.   What about exploring being a staff writer on other people’s sites. That’s a way to get some quick income on more established sites while you grow yours. There are some yakeziers who can help you with ideas if you post on a forum.

Thanks Sandy for the encouragement- our #’s are the same as MOM where I had been writing for over a year and a half. Staff writing is a good idea.  I want to pursue writing a column in our weekly SF paper.

Don’t worry about Adsense.  You ca make money some other ways.  You can try other networks.  Here’s a list (http://www.johnchow.com/make-money-online-recommended-money-makers/).  Like Sandy from First Gen said do better with some other products like books and perhaps some simple living and green products.  I think your side would do better without ad cluttering and instead have some strategic product placements.

I do like to have control over the way our site looks and after some talk our next step will be a book.  I have one written- it just needs to be edited!  We just applied and was accepted to be a part of the the Daily Buzz publisher community.  They are part Federated Media.
