Blog Update- The 1st Six Months

We’ll be taking next week off.  Don’t miss us too much :(  We will be back with more stories and tales of growing and making stuff!  We have over 100 posts- take a looksie around- god knows what you might have missed!

We’ve been writing ‘Mike and Molly’s House’ for 6 months now.  When we launched our site back in September our goal was to make a blog that would become our full time job.  It was our new small business that combined everything we love to do (writing, making stuff, raising chickens and ducks, inventing new objects) in one spot.  We  knew our posts needed to be thoughtful, interesting and have high quality photos.  What we didn’t know was how to monetize the site.  That’s been a learning curve.  In November we were kicked out of Adsense which was the lowest hanging fruit of blog monetization.

Mike: Boo! no more low hanging fruit!….Stupid Adsense!

Molly: Shush your mouth!  What if they turn off our Gmail?…or erase all our GoogleDocs…or…or take us off Google?!!

Mike: (under his breath) Stupid Google giving everything away for free….fricken fricken frack….

Not the worst thing to happen but that revenue would have at least covered our costs for running the site and having it backed up.  Over the last few months we’ve been learning  the lay of the advertising land and found Crystal who searches out sponsors for us, Clickbank where we found a product  we now sell on our site (and get a commission) and how to tweet for $ (Molly will cover that in the coming weeks).  Joining the Yakezie personal finance group lead us to mentors that have been incredibly helpful.

Still at 6 months we are not near our goal of making a full time living from our website.  Surprisingly we are not deflated.  If anything we realize how naive we were.  We’ll keep poking away at the monetization till we get it to work.

Stats for February

Posts:  17 (Ouch!)  This is the first time in 6 months we did not reach our goal.  Our goal is to write at least 20 each month.  This past month we stepped into the world of vlogging.  It takes (us) way more time to create a video post than a traditional written post.  As time goes on this process is speeding up and we will be back to 20 posts a month.

Total posts since we began: 115

Visitors: 4,664 -out of those 3,246  were ‘unique’ visitors (AKA- new readers)

in January we had 3,519 visitors and 2,374 of them were unique

February is our biggest jump.  We have been getting about 500 additional visitors a month since September.  This month we had over 1,000 additional visitors!

Total visitors since we began: 17,676- out of those 10,979 were new

Readership:

Since February 1st  all of you helped us to go from:

123  Facebook fans to 145 !

197  Twitter followers to 227!

176 subscribers to 215! (email and RSS)

Our Alexa ranking went from  161,915 (and 28,270 in the US) to 148,655 (and 26,534 in the US)

Are we making money?  YES!

Sponsors:  $100

Tweets: $.94 (Come on!  Every penny counts!)

Mike: Molly’s thumbs are hurting

This reminds me I need to make sure i have you guys on my blogroll. Not that it would really do much for you, because I’m not a blogebrity but still. Every click counts?

I must’ve missed the AdSense thing cause I had no idea. I can’t believe they did that. Wow.

Blog rolls are a great resource.  When I’m stumpted and wanting some new ideas I go to blogs that I  like and go down their blog rolls to find new and interesting things.  We are on some blog rolls that have less than 500 subscribers (like ours) and we will get 2-10 clicks a day from them.  Those add up!

Sorry Mike – hoped you would win the shopbot. Was counting on getting a few things from it myself.  Mommy Sha
