Smothering Mother

My girls (13 & 13 1/2) are at a new developmental stage.  Womanhood is peeking in and yet they are still kids.   I wish for them to be helpful, kind, independent and assertive young women one day but I often wonder if I’m always the best example.  To circumvent my short-falls I enlist my close friends.  I hope that if the kids don’t feel comfortable about asking Mike or I about something they will go to someone I trust.  It’s just a theory and I’m banking my daughters futures on it.

Many years ago when they wanted to dress like me, and kiss me, and snuggle me.

Uppercase Magazine & a GIVEAWAY!

For those of you not in the know Uppercase is an art magazine published out of Canada.  We found out about it when Molly’s lovely and talented Canadian friend  Kirstie mailed her one of their magazines.  We were both struck by what a beautiful magazine it was.  The quality is high and the articles are inspiring.

We wrote the editor and asked how we could be part of this community of other artists.  She wrote back with an idea.  Her winter issue was all about paper.  She’d love an article on Mike’s papercrete!  Done!

You can find us in issue #12:

Molly, The Tattooed Lady

Warning: There are pictures of Molly’s belly and a little bit of her ass-cheek.  If you feel funny, weird or uncomfortable about seeing that sort of thing we suggest you skip this post!

One day about 20 years ago I decided to get a tattoo.  I’ve always wanted to get a giant sunflower done on my armpit.  The center of the flower would be the actual armpit with the stalk going all the way down my side.  I couldn’t see going through that much discomfort for this glorious design so it just sat in my head for years…and years.

Last March I decided that 2011 was the year for the tattoo.  I ended up deciding on a departure from the sunflower in the armpit theme (I opted for a bunch of flowers winding up my side instead) and went to Dawn, the greatest tattoo artist EVER.  There was only one problem…she was booked all through 2011.  What did I care? I had already waited over 20 years.  What was 9 more months?  2012 is the year of the tattoo! » » »

SOPA and PIPA

On January 18th we along with many other websites like Wikipedia, WordPress (yes, we are a WordPress site) and Google went black.  Mike and I decided to join in the blackout to show our support against two bills that have had a lot of support in the Senate and Congress and could be passed:  SOPA-the Stop Online Piracy Act and PIPA-Personal Information Protection Act.

SOPA and PIPA are purported to provide protection against piracy but they also allow for court ordered censorship of the internet.  We think that while the concerns about piracy are valid these bills are not the solution.

Here’s a video that lays out the issues:

Round Up- Catching Up

After a month of barely staying in touch with the blogging world we (Molly mostly) have spent the last two weeks catching up.  Not to much of our surprise it seems many bloggers were reinvigorated with the start of the new year.

Molly:  Mike and I are very excited for this years Fin Con 2012 conference (a PF bloggers heaven).  It’s going to be held in Denver which is a short day’s drive for us!  We’ll be there and we are so excited to finally ‘see’ all these PF bloggers we follow!

Mike:  Molly has problems not ‘seeing’ who she’s reading.

Molly:  I know anonymity is a preference for many and I can respect that….OK, no scratch that….I can’t!  I need to see faces!!    If I don’t I start making up how you look.  In my head you become a weird anime thrown in with whomever was on the cover of People magazine that week.  Please, I beg you, just email me your photo- I won’t share it with anyone- you know who I speak of.  Mutant Supermodel just released her photo!  Thank you so much Mutant Supermodel!! » » »

Noodle House

While we were in San Diego last week we trotted up to LA for the day to do what else, EAT!  We were headed for lunch with Molly’s cousins and aunt which made it all the better.  In the past we have had marathon cooking/eating sessions with cousin Corey and his girlfriend Terumi who live in LA.  ( He has a blog dedicated to getting Spinal Tap inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame and she blogs about food)  We knew we didn’t have time for a big cooking session so we asked them to pick out an interesting restaurant.  They picked a noodle house called Malan Noodles.

Molly:  Don’t forget to mention there was a sauna house next door, ‘Joy Sauna’!

Mike:  Molly fantazises about opening her own sauna house.  I thought she was going to have a cow when we pulled up to the restuarant and saw it was next door to a sauna house.

Molly:  One day…..I will have a sauna house….or at the very least my own… very own… sauna.

Mike: Yeah, and you can charge people to use it. » » »

We are in full Santa’s workshop mode. Our living room currently looks like this:

We aren’t totally pathetic.  Dumpling snuck off from stacking wood yesterday and set up our tiny Christmas tree.  It’s so festive! » » »

Our New Bestie, Pinterest

Niki over at Debt Free by 30 always has great DIY suggestions.  Some are her own and some are from others.  She catalogues them in Pinterest.  Now I had heard her talk about Pinterest but I didn’t really know what it was.  After I learned about it I started seeing little Pinterest buttons everywhere.  Finally I ventured over to see what the big whoop was about.  It’s a bookmarking site for things you like.  It’s very visual so people’s bookmarks tend to lean towards great photos.

We are very visual people and love to save things (we have notebooks filled with drawings and magazine clippings) so an online bookmark collection of projects, ideas and other stuff is a great way for us to hoard without taking up physical space in our house.

How does it work?

You create ‘boards’ which are essentially categories.   You can name each board whatever you like.    Within each board you ‘pin’ links and pictures from web and blog sites you like. » » »
