“Sometimes you’re cruising along through life and you see someone else doing something so appropriate that it makes you pause and rethink things. I’m not talking about suddenly changing religions or switching from being a carnivore to a vegan but more like you just got a gentle nudge that may send you off in an unexpected direction.”- Mike
Here we are at our first Show and Tell link-up! Show and Tell is a swap meet for ideas and projects where the currency is inspiration. Every week we will kick things off with some of our favorite ideas that we just came across or highlight an idea we got from one of you! » » »
Two weeks ago Mike and I were down at my parents to check on our bees and feed them if they needed it. We had them in Albuquerque because the winters are much milder than in Santa Fe. After the winter of 2010 with its record breaking temperatures of -25 degrees we wanted to do everything we could to help them thrive.
Checking a comb.
Surprise! When we opened the hives this year four of them were empty, not a trace of bees. Apparently the bees had just flown away. What had been the strongest hives still had several combs full of honey. The fifth hive had a bee colony but they were all dead. » » »
We have four outbuildings that serve as storage and workspaces. One started life as a carport/privacy screen from the neighbors and later turned into a full fledged building. We call it the garage though there are no cars in it. It does double duty as Molly’s fabric/project storage and a small shop for Mike.
Another building started life as a shed for a biodeisel plant Mike was going to build but ended up becoming the home for the CNC machine instead. Recently the CNC machine moved down the road to his inventor’s club co-founder and buddy Rick’s house. With it gone we decided to rethink the outbuildings.
Currently Molly does most of her projects in the living room.
Molly: It’s not a terrible situation but if I only have an hour to work on something it’s tough to get it all pulled out just to pack it back up again.
Mike: We’ve decided to have his-n-her’s studios. Molly will take over the old CNC shop and move her stuff out of the garage. I’ll reconfigure the garage to make it into my workshop. » » »
Steamed buns are delicious, Rea-LLy delicious. When Molly’s cousin Corey and his girlfriend Terumi were out here this winter they showed us how to make steamed buns. Molly’s sister Lise was visiting too and she got in on the action. Molly shot a great video tutorial of Lise and Corey on how to make steamed buns. We’ve got it down below after the recipes. Don’t miss it. It’s hilarious.
Our 3 week and 1 day challenge to find and build a niche site is up! Where’s our site? Will we make money? Well, not quite…but we did learn quite a bit and it’s paying off on our site here.
Take a looksie, the vlog will fill y’ all in:
Now what are we going to do for money? Well, Congress did extend our unemployment benefits so we will have that but we need to find some real solid income. We have a few irons in the fire and we think we are close to one of them coming to fruition so we won’t have to dip into our emergency fund. We’ll keep you posted!
Molly: I’m looking forward to making more vlogs, how about you hon?
Mike: You know, I like making the vlogs more than working on a niche site!
Molly: Lordy loo! What am I going to do with you?

A few weeks ago Mike showed you how you can make your own seed light station and how to make seed flats. That light station was our first attempt at growing seeds indoors. The idea was to get a jump on the growing season and avoid having to purchase (those oh so pricey) vegetable plants at the store. Molly loves flowers but hates the price so she spent a goodly amount of time starting flowers from seeds.
Mike: The small seed station was a great start but we wanted to have much more going on.
Molly: It just wasn’t enough space.
Mike: I ended up building a makeshift growing station under the large art desk we have in the living room. I attached some lights to the underside of the desk and we started shoving seed starts underneath.
We thought we were going to make educational videos when we set out to do this series but really we just like amusing ourselves so if you’re like Steve and still have no idea what a keyword is or for that matter what the heidi-ho a niche site is keep watching…we think at the very least you will get a good belly laugh from it.
If you are just joining us check out the first in this series here (or just skip to the video here) and the second part here (and here’s just the straight video).

Hang on to your seats as we peel back the curtain to reveal the dark secrets behind how we’re mining Google to find the perfect term to bring the hoards to our new niche website.
There comes a time in every blogger’s life when they start thinking – ”How the heck am I going to get more people to my site?” Turns out it’s all about the SEO (search engine optimization) here in internet land. Really the question is how can I get a good ranking in Google so that I’m at the top of the page when someone searches for something I’ve written about.
Oh, for those of you who are thinking, ‘Yawn…watching a video on SEO keyword research sounds really boring’ we are ready to prove you wrong. Well, at the very least it’s only 4 minutes and if you don’t like it you can have your money back.
Molly: We are STUNNING people!
Mike: Forgive Molly, she just finished imagining she was presenting at a seminar on positive thinking. » » »
We like to brag about our double wide. How great it is that we only need 1,100 sq ft in which to live our lives. We are so high and mighty about how we don’t need all that space and anyways who really wants to clean all those extra bathrooms?
But our dirty little secret is that we have more square footage in our outbuildings than we have in our house. We sprinkle hints here and there that we have hoarding tendencies which we will go into further at some point…maybe. For now we’ll leave that tucked away in one of our ‘buildings’.
Juliette (Molly’s friend): No, I think one can tell when they walk in your front door. You have lots of ‘things’. Things you use but lots of things, piled. Neat piles, but piles.
Molly: Really Juliette?
Juliette: I benefit from all your piles. When we come over there’s always plenty to play with! » » »
